Philosopher. Husband, Father and Friend. Professor John Shenk was a modern
renaissance man, a gifted and dedicated innovator whose legacy lives on in
Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
John Shenk was born in Lancaster, PA, the son of William S. and Ida Baker Shenk.
He married Dorothy Adams Shenk, and together they had a daughter Julie Ann
Howell, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
John Shenk taught at the former Old Boys High School in Lancaster from 1934 to
1937. He then taught industrial arts at the former Millersville State Teachers
College from 1937 to 1958.
He established the first Intermediate Unit program at McCaskey High School,
where he taught from 1959 to 1978.
Professor Shenk was also a hypnotic Counselor in Lancaster County for 47 years,
during which time he worked with the Lancaster City Police Department and
various doctors and dentists for special circumstances.
A graduate of Millersville University, Temple University, University of
Pennsylvania and Rhode Island School of Design, he earned a master’s degrees in
electricity and math.
He was the author of a book called “Meet the Amish.”
He was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lancaster, Free and
Accepted Masonic Lodge No. 43, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Lancaster County Shrine
Club, Knights Templar, and Lancaster County Teachers Retirement Association.
Professor John Shenk died in 1999 at age 86.
